The Happening Place – Central Harbour, Hong Kong

“The Happening Place” was based on our award-winning entry for Designing Hong Kong’s Central Waterfront Design Competition in 2007. This design proposal responded to the key current constraints in the Hong Kong Government’s updated plan and was aimed to transform the Central Waterfront into a popular and iconic destination through the creation of places for people; improving the public realm for a better quality of urban life.

This alternate proposal consisted of eight nodes along the harbourfront, connecting to the hinterland through north-south and east-west linkages at, above and below grade. We implemented a redistribution of the proposed GFA to create a more liveable environment, while still accommodating the GFA requirements. We further improved the waterside access through the use of water taxis that connected various points along the harbourfront, adding to the existing cross-harbour ferry services.

This submission was part of a public engagement process that was instrumental in influencing the Government plan for the Central Harbourfront that is currently being developed.
