Revealing Nature Public Artwork -

City Dress-up Public Art Competition

Year: 2018-2020

Client: Development Bureau

Location: Central Harbourfront by Pier No. 10, Hong Kong Island, Hong Kong

The 'Revealing Nature' Artwork* represents the increasing urbanization and development that our cities are experiencing, and as a reminder that beneath almost every paved surface there once was luscious green or splashing water. In the context of the site location and the history of land reclamation of the harbour, this Artwork portrays the paved surface being ‘peeled away’ from the ground revealing the water of the harbour below. The Artwork has cleverly incorporated design elements paying respect to its strategic location adjacent to Victoria Harbour. The top section of the sculpture resembles a cresting wave of concrete paving about to crash down upon the water below it. The wave represents the motion of water within Victoria Harbour and creates a connection between the Artwork and its location near the harbour.

One of the innovative aspects of the project from a design perspective is the pre-fabricated moulded wave form including the material used for the Artwork and its structural design. The use of fibre-reinforced concrete has many applications in not only artwork, but also buildings, although with the use of technology, the possibilities in creating different shapes and structural solutions are endless. The project features a complex design form with a sophisticated cantilever structure that all together sends the message to the industry that the sky is the limit in the field of architecture, urban design and planning.
