“Five Senses of Nantou Ancient City”
Gateway to Linked Heritage
Year : 2009
Client : Shenzhen Municipal Planning Bureau
Location: Shenzhen, China
Site Area: ~4 ha
Nantou Ancient City is rich in cultural heritage but it had its physical and environmental constraints that were layered with complex social and economic issues. The aim of our design concept was to give Nantou Ancient City a distinct identity with the interplay of its rich heritage. Our Ancient City Gateway Park formed a true entrance to Nantou Ancient City, highlighting the city’s rich cultural heritage and transforming it into an attractive destination for both local and regional visitors.
The design scheme is grounded in a strong sense of place and not only addresses necessary physical improvements, but complements and acts as a catalyst for socioeconomic development within the area to improve the quality of life of the people of Nantou. Our plan creates a gateway to Nantou Ancient City and a central piazza for community use; improving open and public space and helping restore the city’s historic significance and seat from which Hong Kong was ruled in ancient times.
